Maine Bear Hunting

Maine has the largest bear population east of the Mississippi. There's an estimated 30,000-35,000 black bears in the state of Maine, with the most of the population in Northern Maine. Due to the thick brush and woods, spot and stalk hunts are not doable. There’s a reason why our bears are nicknamed, “the ghosts of the woods.” We do our bear hunts over bait in WMD 8. Due to the population being so large, it's normal to have  at least 4-5 different bear hitting one site, and at times it's not uncommon to have more than 7 or 8 different bear on one site. 

We start baiting our sites 1 month prior to the start of hunting season. We use trail cameras at all of our sites so we can keep track of the bears that are coming in. 

We offer two different plans for our bear hunts as well as bear trapping. The American Plan includes 5 days of hunting; arrive at camp Sunday afternoon after 12:00 and hunt Monday through Friday evenings and depart camp on Saturday morning. This hunt includes lodging in a fully furnished camp, 2 meals a day, (brunch is around 10:00am and dinner will be when hunters return back to camp in the evening), transportation to and from the bait sites, game retrieval, field dressing, transportation to the tagging station and to the butcher. Our American Plan for the bear trapping offers the same as the bear hunt, instead of sitting over the bait we'll assist you in setting a snare over the bait and try trapping a bear. In Maine, we can harvest a second bear by trapping. Our Housekeeping plan is everything as we listed above, except no meals. With the housekeeping plan, our hunters are responsible for their own food.  

Here at Roody's Family Tradition Guide Service, we want to see more youths in the field and have the experience that most hunters don't get a chance to have. We run a a special for hunters under 16. On youth day only, we are offering youth hunters to sit over bait for only $250!!!! If the trigger is pulled, there is a $500 fee added on to the price.
